Filterhouse Studios Accommodation Lancaster

Filterhouse Studios, Scotforth Road, Lancaster is a short walk from campus and directly opposite the new Lancaster University Science Park.

Lancaster University ranks Top-10 with all major University guides and is hence a highly attractive investment hotspot for student accommodation.

BSP Consulting were the civil, structural and transportation engineers on this £8m brownfield site.

Filterhouse Studios Accommodation Lancaster, is a new build development of 168 en suite student rooms, the scheme comprises of two four-storey steel-frame buildings, there is a games room, Cinema, Study rooms, Lounges and amenity space for the students.

We coordinated locations of service riser voids with the architect, and made alterations to the lay-out to include a revised plant room location.

Key challenges and engineering solutions

Providing a minimal structural build-up so that the floors would fit within a limited amount of headroom.
Positioning bracing in areas that would not obstruct window openings, whilst maintaining the stability of the proposed building.

Designing the necessary steelwork to support the various cantilevered facades to the building.

Introducing movement joints within a steel structure that has a length of over 100 metres.

Agreeing column locations within floor plans that were tightly packed with accommodation.

Design and detailing steel framing to support pre-cast stairs prior to obtaining the stair specialists design, and adjusting the steelwork upon receipt of the stair specialists.
