Office Depot International Leicester

A New UK and Ireland headquarters building, covering 50,000 sq.ft. built using a steel frame construction and innovative ‘Kalwall” translucent walling system. Associated with the offices and on the same site is a 300,000 sq.ft distribution warehouse.

Office Depot International, Leicester is an office products supplier that deals directly with its customers.

Office Depot International (UK), or ODI, operates Viking Direct, one of the leading office supply retailers in the UK.

It distributes about 15,000 brands through catalogues, telephone sales, and the Internet, offering an array of paper and writing products, ink and toner, small office machines, furniture and seating, and warehouse and janitorial supplies.

The project consisted of the design of a £20m, 3,000sqm office and a 25,000sqm distribution centre/ warehouse.

BSP Consulting provided civil, structural and transportation engineering design consultancy services.

Key challenges and engineering solutions:

Incorporating a number of ‘green’ technologies such as rain water harvesting, a SuDS surface water attenuation scheme and innovative translucent wall panelling.

The building had a high-bay section with the floor installed to DM1 tolerance.

The highbay section was on an area of fill. The fill specification was therefore critical. It was carried out using a cement stabilised site won material achieving very low void ratio.
