Key challenges and engineering solutions:
The Dunelm Retail Store Nottingham is a 11mm high steel framed building with a 2.7m high feature parapet.
The ground conditions, 8m of Alluvium over Sandstone bedrock required the used of piled foundations.
A total of 210 driven piles were used to support the steel frame, the external façade and the ground floor slab.
The ground floor slab was required to support a future first floor mezzanine, that applied column loads of up to 170kN onto the slab.
A 350mm thick steel fibre reinforced floor was designed to support the mezzanine column loads.
A 700mm square pile head was used on each pile under the slab to reduce punching shear stress in the floor slab.
Due to the presence of hydrocarbons within the Alluvium, a gas/hydrocarbon vapour membrane was used under the footprint of the building.
