Peterlee Retail Park County Durham

Peterlee Retail Park County Durham project reached practical completion six weeks early, featuring a range of shops and hospitality outlets in the North East – despite the challenges of the Covid pandemic.

The redevelopment is of a circa 6 acre brownfield site for retail and leisure.

Circa 65,000sqft. mixed leisure and retail.

BSP was the civil and structural engineer on the development at Peterlee Retail Park County Durham, which includes Home Bargains, Lidl, Sue Ryder, KFC, Starbucks and charging station InstaVolt.

It is the latest in a long line of similar projects that BSP has undertaken for Quora, a leading national commercial and mixed-use property development firm specialising in retail and mixed-use developments in town, district and local centres.

Other members of the team included principal contractor Jessops Construction, architect The Harris Partnership, HPM as project manager, geo-environmental engineers Geodyne and Cynergi, as employer’s agent.

The scheme, will provide much needed regeneration to the town centre, increasing the retail offer in the area.

Key challenges and engineering solutions

There was an established need to improve water quality by implementation of SUDS features.

To this end, we provided filter trenches and permeable paving to slow the ingress of surface water into the sewer network and improve water quality by filtration of silt particles.

In addition, oil separators were provided to serve all paved areas on site in order to mitigate the risk of pollutants entering the local watercourse.
