BSP Consulting provided geotechnical, civil and structural engineering services for Apollo Court Business Park Leicestershire, built by Willmott Dixon for Leicestershire County Council.

The design team worked toward BIM level 2 with a collaborative model.

It has created a range of high-spec industrial units ranging from 1,000 to 9,000 sq. ft. which will support start-ups and firms looking to expand.

The venture is part-funded by a £2.4m allocation from the Local Growth Fund, a pot of government funding awarded to the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership Limited (LLEP) for projects that benefit the local area and economy.

The scheme is part of the LLEP’s strategic economic plan which aims to create 45,000 extra jobs, reduce unemployment by 50 per cent, support 15,000 businesses to expand and help 1,000 start-ups – Coalville is earmarked as a priority area.

During its construction contractor Willmott Dixon invested £437,000 into the local communities through engaging with schools and colleges and ensuring 91 per cent of spend and 78 per cent of labour were within 40 miles of the facility.

Key challenges and engineering solutions:

The site had deep made ground which precluded shallow foundations. Piles would have been too expensive so we suggested the use of ground improvement and sought advice from specialists at an early stage which allowed traditional foundations to be used enabling the scheme to remain within the clients budget.

Ground improvement techniques over deep piles provided significant cost savings allowing the project to go ahead.
