Rail bridge pre-casting facility

BSP is part of the team creating a new rail bridge pre-casting facility.

Work has just started on site for the 300m long building at Asfordby near Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire.

BSP is lead engineer on the project, providing civil and structural engineering services for the premises, which are being built by Pure Construction.

The facility, which is expected to come into use by the end of the year, will produce pre-cast beams for railway bridges. The beams – made out of pre-tensioned concrete – will range in size up to 30m in length and will be used on the UK rail network as part of infrastructure investment and improvements.

BSP director Clive Roddick said: “This is a challenging site, as there are significant site constraints. The process has to be level and the site is only just slightly longer than the building.

“BSP has significant experience in building industrial and manufacturing premises, and in the railway sector, as well as expertise in bridges, so we are very pleased to have been appointed to build this new rail bridge pre-casting facility in the East Midlands.”

Lead consultant

BSP’s role as lead consultant engineer on the scheme includes the external works, which involve large cranes to carry the beams from the manufacturing facility to vehicles to allow them to be transported off site.

The project is a Freyssinet Tierra-Armada Roger Bullivant joint venture.
