Work has almost been completed on a prominent Nottingham shopfront refurbishment scheme.

BSP Consulting was part of the team involved in restoring the stunning Grade II Listed Victorian shopfronts in Wheeler Gate to their former glory.

The Cavendish Building and Premier House have benefitted from an investment of nearly £700,000 to restore shopfronts and features to their former glory. Just under £300,000 of the total investment has been grant aided by Historic England.

Historical features

Original historic features have been reinstated to nine of the shopfronts in the street. The work included new timber framework, large glazing, high level signage and recessed entrances with decorative tiling. It will help to bring a distinctive and smart, unified look to the large row of shops and units that make up most of the eastern side of Wheeler Gate.

Others involved in the project included Rayner Davies Architects, Pulse Consult, Greenway and Partners, Nottingham City Council, Historic England and Stevenson Bros.

Gareth Ellison, Associate – Structural Engineer at BSP Consulting said: “This Nottingham shopfront refurbishment scheme has significantly improved Wheeler Gate. It’s breathed new life into the area and created a stylish row of retail units, which will be an asset to the city centre.

“BSP Consulting has been involved in several city centre schemes in Nottingham recently which have improved the streetscape and brought new impetus to some key buildings. We are proud to see the result of this project.”

The Cavendish building was built in 1894 with the Premier House building being built slightly later in 1900. Both buildings were listed as Grade II in 1995.

Another similar scheme that BSP was involved in recently in Nottingham was the Gordon House restoration project, which renovated a prominent building in Carrington Street. Read all about it here
