BSP Consulting has been appointed as the structural and civil engineer on a major refurbishment project at Leicester College.

The redevelopment will involve refurbishing a 19th Century canal side building on the Abbey Park Campus.

Work to be undertaken includes routing the entrance to a more accessible location, opening up the building to create collaborative working facilities and spaces within an atrium area, and creating larger classrooms.

De Montfort University Framework

BSP secured the appointment via the De Montfort University Framework as part of a team led by Moss Architecture, and also including Couch Perry Wilkes and MDA Consulting. It is the first contract that BSP has secured under the framework.

BSP Consulting has also been successful on the De Montfort University framework in its own right to provide civil and structural engineering consultancy services.

Engineers at BSP have worked with the team involved in the scheme to design the new steel structure for the building.

BSP director Paul Elphick said: “We are pleased to commence works on this exciting development for Leicester College which involves a significant new entrance area that is designed to provide a much more welcoming and interesting space to this heritage structure, with BSP undertaking design of the new support structure.”

Funded by the Department for Education’s T Level Capital Fund, the refurbishment will improve facilities for students on the new T Levels technical study programmes.

T Levels, which launched in 2020, are two-year qualifications which combine classroom study and industry placements, giving students the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge employers look for.

This appointment at Leicester College is the latest in a number of higher education projects that BSP has helped to deliver.

It is being led by BSP’s Leicester office.

Moss Architecture is the Framework lead and architect on the scheme, with MDA Consulting providing cost consultancy and CPW the mechanical and electrical services.

Verity Hancock, Principal of Leicester College, said: “We’re delighted that our bid to the T Level Capital Fund has been successful. The funding will support new building works at our Abbey Park Campus that will enable us to provide top quality facilities for the new cohort of T Level students set to start in September 2021.”
