An £8.8 million scheme for South Kesteven District Council (SKDC) has been completed in Grantham.
Built by Lindum Group and designed by Franklin Ellis Architects, BSP Consulting provided all civil and structural engineering services.
Within the eight-acre site, facilities include modern office space, staff welfare amenities, meeting rooms, a bigger and improved vehicle workshop, solar panels and electric vehicle charging points.
Turnpike Close, replaces the former Alexandra Road depot that was built in the 1970s with a modern, fit-for-purpose facility that will be home to more 280 staff. The new development allows for service expansion and better supports the Council’s current and future operational needs.
The new depot was delivered on time and on budget and is now home to the council’s waste services operation Street Scene. This includes SKDC’s grounds maintenance service, housing repairs and technical services and corporate health and safety.
Lindum Group Co-chairman Edward Chambers said: “Lindum was pleased to collaborate with South Kesteven District Council once again. From the start we’ve shared SKDC’s vision of creating facilities that foster operational efficiency and sustainability, while being future proof. The team has brought that vision to life to deliver a modern, sustainable, purpose-built facility providing vital community services we can all be proud of.”
Designed with energy-efficiency in mind, the depot will be cheaper to run and bring much-improved improved welfare standards for staff including drying areas, a canteen and training facilities, alongside an emergency planning facility and the infrastructure to enable increased use of electric vehicles, further saving money on traditional fuel costs.
BSP Consulting Director Carol Ell said: “It was a pleasure to be involved in the civil and structural engineering design at the Turnpike Close depot with Lindum Construction on behalf of South Kesteven District Council. The team has created a great facility which supports essential reliable and modern public services for the local community.”
As a modern energy-efficient depot, Turnpike Close will also have a positive impact on the council’s carbon reduction target hedgerow, 32 trees and 450 plants incorporated as part of the project.
