Award for Abbey Meadows

BSP Consulting is celebrating the news of an award for Abbey Meadows regeneration scheme.

The Leicester scheme took the title of Residential Regeneration Project of the Year at the East Midlands Property Dinner Awards 2022.

The housing scheme, part of the wider regeneration of Leicester’s Waterside area, was designed to maximise the benefits of biodiversity and nature, incorporating sustainable drainage, as well as habitat creation, such as hedgehog routes along the canal.

BSP was involved from the post planning to construction stage, undertaking flood risk assessment and developing the SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) and a fully integrated private and adoptable drainage strategy.

BSP was both civil and structural engineer on the £10m project to provide 82 new homes, which was delivered in a partnership involving GS Developments, Nottingham Community Housing Association, and Lovell Partnerships. Architect for the scheme was RG+P.

BSP director Tony Goddard said: “It’s great news to hear about this award for Abbey Meadows regeneration scheme. This was a brownfield site with a number of challenges, including low levels and close proximity to a canal. We’re proud to have created a scheme with flair and played a part in developing this 4.8-acre site, which has provided much-needed new homes in a key area of Leicester that’s undergoing a significant transformation.”

The scheme features source control elements such as permeable parking and private driveways to attenuate and treat surface water runoff, a dry swale to serve the adoptable site access road, and an adoptable surface water drainage network incorporating attenuation comprising oversized pipes acting as final site control.

It is 200 yards from the National Space Centre and the city’s Abbey Park.

Abbey Meadows was awarded the title of Residential Regeneration Project of the Year at the EMPD Awards, which were held on 8th September at the De Vere East Midlands Conference Centre, Nottingham.

BSP was also delighted to see a highly commended award presented to CPMG Architects in the Design Excellence Award at the ceremony. Structural engineers at BSP supported the company with development of the firm’s new HQ in St Peter’s Gate, Nottingham.

In other award news, two projects that BSP was involved in have been shortlisted for the ProCon Leicestershire Awards 2022. Wyggeston Hospital Hub and Cottages, Leicester, is a Large Residential Scheme of the Year Award 2022 finalist, while Snibston Colliery Visitor Centre, Coalville, has been named a finalist in the Regeneration Project of the Year Award 2022. Winners will be revealed on 10th November.
