Wyggeston Hospital Hub Leicester

Founded as an almshouse charity in 1513, Wyggeston’s Hospital has been providing sheltered housing, support and care for vulnerable older people in Leicester for more than 500 years.

This latest development included adding a new administrative and entertainment hub and additional housing to the existing extra-care accommodation. Eight new apartments and six cottages were created. A newly landscaped scheme was also provided for residents to enjoy.

The Hub provides a clear focal point to the site. Created for the residents to access its facilities and activities, it also contains a fully serviceable commercial kitchen and large patio to host fundraising or celebration events.

An attenuation pond has been placed at the heart of the site, as a focal resource for the residents, staff and wildlife.

Engineering Challenge

With cost being a major driver BSP designed the structure as load bearing masonry with cranked steel roof beams in order to gain the usable space required. With challenging topography BSP explored a number of options for ground retaining structures including gabion baskets, cast in situ reinforced concrete and preformed mortar less masonry construction.

Variable ground conditions led to a mixed strategy of foundation design utilising traditional construction wherever possible.

The new ground floor of the Hub is now fully occupied, and the café is in daily use.

All the new eight apartments and six cottages are occupied.

BSP engineers were involved in the civil and structural engineering aspects for the £4.75m Wyggeston Hospital Hub and Cottages development.

The project won Large Residential Scheme of the Year Award at the ProCon Leicestershire Awards 2022.
