This major Tesco superstore scheme in Rotherham involves redeveloping the former civic buildings site at Walker Place and the construction of a new store and petrol filling station for supermarket chain Tesco.
The project includes the demolition of Norfolk House, the Library and Arts Centre, the Civic Centre and the existing Centenary Way flyover which is being replaced by a new road junction created between Drummond Street and Centenary Way.
Extensive road improvement works form a key part of this development, plus redevelopment of the landscaping of Effingham Square, which involves moving the Grade II listed Hastings Clock.
The clock was given to Rotherham in 1912 by a local businessman to commemorate the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary. It initially stood in Effingham Square, was moved to Walker Place in the 1960s, and is now being returned to Effingham Square as part of the scheme.
Key challenges and engineering solutions at Tesco Superstore Rotherham Yorkshire:
The site sloped significantly meaning that one end of the building was cut into the ground by in excess of 6m and the other side was on poor quality fill. There was potential for high differential settlement.
The initial proposal was for a piled solution however with time constraints would be excessive. A solution of constructing a tiered formation allowed traditional foundations founded on the rock that in places were 5m below the ground floor level.
The service yard to the back of the building had to be designed for HGV access but was a suspended structure and required a ‘bridge deck’ design to accommodate the loading.
The site required a rerouting of the Rotherham Ring road. This included significant junction design challenges.
