Murray Park Community School in Mickleover has been delivered for Derby City Council via Scape Group to create a new two-storey block featuring 15 additional classrooms.
Featuring a new block at the front of the existing secondary school, the development contains a reception area, 15 classrooms, a library and new offices for the head teacher and administration staff. It has been built to increase pupil capacity by around 550 spaces up to 1,650 and to create a secure contemporary gateway into the school complex.
The traditional build school benefits from Underfloor heating, interactive whiteboards and extra wide corridors the £9m state-of-the-art secondary school has Been built on time, on budget and within Education & Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) guidelines, built using the CLASP system.
The Mickleover school, will be used for maths and English lessons and food technology, the expansion allows the school to increase pupil capacity from 1,100 to 1,650 across years seven to 11, with an annual admission of 330 pupils every year.
Murray Park Community School’s new Maple Park Centre was commended by the Council of Derby Civic Society under the ‘Best New Buildings’ category.
Completed ahead of schedule, the new 15-classroom building is complete with the latest technology, underfloor heating, interactive whiteboards and extra wide corridors offering an inspiring learning environment fit for 21st Century teaching.
Key challenges and engineering solutions:
The design included flush wall constructions both in classrooms and corridors. We designed slim columns at closer than average spacings to achieve this so all columns were fully hidden in the walls.
We studied historic mapping plans to better understand the predevelopment land drainage regime. Combining this with a detailed site walkover revealed drainage we could use that site staff had been unaware of.
