Arbourthorne retirement complex and bungalows is a Sanctuary Housing scheme which has created 52 apartments for the over 55s and four eco-friendly homes. BSP Consulting provided civil and structural engineering services for the project.
Arbourthorne apartments formed part of the Pathfinder programme to bring radical improvements to the housing market in selected areas and to bring transformational changes to towns and neighbourhoods to create successful, vibrant places where people will choose to live.
The scheme was part of a redevelopment of the Arbourthorne Fields area, and was built by Keepmoat, who received a high rating during an assessment under the Considerate Constructors Scheme while building work was underway. The contractors received a ‘Performance Beyond Compliance’ certificate after achieving a mostly excellent rating.
The site had some engineering challenges to overcome:
- The steep site led to some complicated civil engineering levels designs and Foundation solutions.
- The incorporation of SuDS drainage into the scheme at a time when this was not normal practice.
- Integrating the scheme with the existing adopted highway.
As a key development partner, Sheffield City Council provided the land for the development.
