Support for homeless men

Demolition work has started on site for a development that will support homeless men in Nottingham.

Framework Housing Association is behind the new supported living building in Alpine Street, Basford.

BSP Consulting is providing civil and structural engineering services for the project. The scheme has been designed by Allan Joyce Architects.

BSP associate Gareth Ellison said: “We are very pleased to have been appointed as the civil and structural engineer for this development which will provide support for homeless men in Nottingham.

“We are a Nottingham-headquartered company and this new facility will be an excellent asset to the city and of great value to the homeless men who will be supported by it.”

The 20-flat building will be constructed on the site of former lace factory Lee House, following demolition of the factory.

It has been designed with psychological and trauma-informed practice in mind, creating the best possible home life for people who have complex needs and experienced rough sleeping.

Communal spaces will include room for activities and treatment as well as private rooms for delivering 1-2-1 support. It will have 24-hour staffing with support provided by specialist Support Navigators.

Nottingham City Council has donated £200,000 to the scheme, with the principle funder being the government’s Single Homeless Accommodation Project.

Homeless to House campaign

Framework currently has a Homeless to House campaign which is aiming to raise £183,471 to help turn the disused lace factory into the supportive accommodation for homeless men and rough sleepers.

Claire Eden, Head of Fundraising and Communications, said: “Shame and stigma often contribute to men suffering in silence. Many struggle alone. By the time they access our services, most men have been rough sleeping for months, sometimes years. They are entrenched in the lifestyle and carry an enormous backlog of trauma.

“With the proper housing and support, men can and do recover from homelessness. We want to provide a home where they can find stability, receive wraparound support for their mental health needs and substance use issues, and find their confidence again.”
