This will be a world-class facility and the maintenance team will be increased by 50 jobs.Martin Frobisher,
Network Rail's East Midlands route managing director
Network Rail required a new Maintenance Depot headquarters at Mercia House, Chequers Road, on the West Meadows Derby Industrial Estate.
The new three-storey development involved creating a new maintenance depot with office accommodation, stores and welfare facilities, including a gym, locker rooms, showers and rest area for staff.
The design of the Depot was in accordance with guidance from the Environment Agency, local council and general Network Rail design standards.
The project was completed on time, under budget, to a very high standard and great satisfaction of Network Rail.
BSP Consulting carried out civil and structural engineering services which included a steel frame design, pile and ground beam foundations, design of vehicular access and a car parking area.
The Maintenance Depot has been designed to BIM Level 2.
In June 2015 the development was rated highly commended at the ICE East Midlands Merit Awards.
The awards celebrate the best civil engineering projects or teams in the region.
Key challenges and engineering solutions:
The scheme includes a SuDS drainage system, levels and building construction so as not to exacerbate flooding in the area.
The steel framed office and stores are on pile and ground beam foundations.
