With a growing interest in solar power, BSP Consulting has been undertaking an increasing number of weight-bearing checks to ensure buildings are suitable for photovoltaic panel installation.
The company has been called on to confirm that buildings such as warehouses and other commercial units have the capacity to support the weight of PV products on their roofs.
BSP director Paul Elphick explained: “Companies are keen to reduce their carbon footprint, plus cut down on their energy costs, and photovoltaic panel installation is one way that they can potentially do this.
“As engineers, our role is to assess buildings to check they have the capacity to support the weight of the systems.
“We’ve undertaken several checks over recent months including on premises in the south of England as well as in the East Midlands and beyond. These large warehouses and industrial buildings have substantial areas on the roofs that could potentially house photovoltaic panels but of course it’s crucial to check that they can take the weight of the PV products ahead of any installation.”
Sustainability
BSP has teamed up with Environmental Energies Ltd, a Market Harborough-based company with a team of renewable energy specialists who deliver expert unbiased advice on the most suitable green energy to meet business needs, to move into this field.
“Once checks have been made on the supporting loads, companies that go ahead with installation of PV panels on the roofs of their premises then use the energy generated to power all sorts of things including vehicles and equipment,” added Paul. “It’s all part of being a sustainable company, and we are delighted to be playing a role in helping businesses to do this, as it aligns with our own ethos here at BSP Consulting.”
