New padel tennis scheme
July 18, 2025

Planning permission has been granted for a new padel tennis scheme that BSP Consulting is involved in.

The scheme in Wigan is the third padel tennis project that the company has helped to deliver, with two further padel schemes in the pipeline – one in Wales and another in the Midlands.

This latest development is for Fitness First and UAE-based World Padel Academy (WPA) and is to be built at Stadium Way, Wigan.

The plans involve re-purposing three existing outdoor five-a-side football pitches to create six indoor padel tennis courts.

BSP is the civil and structural engineer on the development. Other members of the team include CPMG Architects and planning consultant Grace Machin.

Popular pastime

BSP director Tony Goddard said: “Padel has become a popular pastime and over the last couple of years we have helped to deliver padel tennis schemes at Notts County’s ground in Nottingham and at Mansfield Town Football Club’s ground.

“This new padel tennis scheme will bring much-needed padel tennis courts to Wigan. Originally from Mexico, padel is one of the fastest growing sports in Europe and we are currently working on two other potential padel schemes for our clients.

“If any of our clients want to find out more about our experience of helping to deliver leisure facilities, we have a section on our website here which gives information.”

Padel is played in doubles and is often described as a mix of tennis and squash.

The scheme in Wigan is to be built next to a Fitness First centre. EV charging is to be provided, along with new bike racks.

BSP provided a flood risk assessment and a transport statement in support of the proposals, which have been granted planning permission by Wigan Council.

World Padel Academy says that it is committed to growing padel tennis is the UK. Find out more about the WPA here.
