BSP Consulting is delighted with the news that CPMG Architects’ new office in St Peter’s Gate, Nottingham, has won a British Council of Offices award.
The scheme was selected as the regional winner in the Projects up to 1,500m2 category.
BSP undertook some structural engineering design work for CPMG for the development within the three-storey Grade II listed property, which was originally the headquarters of the Nottingham Water Company and dates from the 1870s.
The judges praised the scheme saying: “The design takes advantage of the loftiness of the striking three-storey structure, delivering the required amount of space through the sympathetic installation of a mezzanine floor, while retaining many of the building’s original 1870s features. The BCO judges were impressed by the immediate sense of light, airiness and space within the building, with daylight pouring in from the large-scale windows. The reception area takes the form of a coffee bar at the heart of the space which adds to the sense of generosity of welcome towards visitors and provides breakout space for staff. Meeting spaces are both formal and informal, with the former subterranean bank vaults now home to an agile work environment, including a break-out zone and welfare areas.”
BSP Consulting business development manager Carrie Booth said: “We’re thrilled for CPMG Architects that their recently converted offices have received such a prestigious award. As a company, BSP Consulting has worked with CPMG Architects on many projects over several years and we were delighted to help the company with its own project to develop a new home for their talented team.”
New mezzanine
CPMG, which was founded in 1997 and designs buildings across the UK and around the world signed a lease on its new Nottingham office in 2020 during lockdown. The building had previously been a banking HQ and a restaurant, before lying vacant for three years. Its high ceilings, generous glazing and large volumes permitted the introduction of a mezzanine where the design studio, associated project storage, personal storage toolboxes and informal meeting space are located.
The company moved in following conversion in July 2021.
The scheme will now go forward to the BCO National Awards, which take place on 4th October.
