BSP engineers came up with a bespoke site-specific solution at the pre-planning stage of an application to ensure flood risk challenges were overcome.
Initially the Environment Agency objected to plans for six single-storey commercial units on a brownfield site in Broad Street, Syston, Leicestershire. The land is located within Flood Zone 3.
But flood risk engineers at BSP Consulting devised a number of bespoke solutions which satisfied both the client and the Environment Agency, and now the scheme has conditional planning permission from Charnwood Borough Council.
Flood Risk Engineer Alysha Searle said: “We spent a lot of time working with the client and the Environment Agency on site-specific solutions to make sure that the flood risk challenges were overcome on this site. It lies partly within Flood Zone 3 and entirely within Flood Zone 2. Initially the Environment Agency had concerns about flooding, but at the pre-planning stage, BSP was able to create tailored solutions that suited both the Environment Agency and our client.
“Our solutions on site will prevent the flood risk from being pushed elsewhere in the area.
“This project is a prime example of how BSP can support clients at an early stage in a development with resolutions to pre-planning challenges.”
Drainage designs
Detailed drainage designs have now been completed for the site.
As well as undertaking the Flood Risk Assessment and the Drainage Strategy for the development, BSP is also the structural engineer on the project for client Westernrange Ltd. Other members of the team include Benchmark Property and Staniforth Architects.
