Delighted to hear of BREEAM success for Castleward redevelopment in Derby

May 24, 2013

BSP is welcoming the news that Derby’s £100 million Castleward redevelopment has become only the second development project in the country to scoop accreditation from BRE for its sustainability.

BSP is civil, structural, geotechnical and traffic engineer for the first phase of Castleward, which has just achieved a ‘good’ certification under the BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) Communities following a voluntary assessment.

The BREEAM Communities assessment measures the sustainability of new large-scale developments at the master planning stage, with certification awarded to projects where economic, social and environmental sustainability are being carefully considered.

Currently undergoing redevelopment by Compendium Living to become a new residential neighbourhood, Castleward is a scheme that will transform 30 acres of brownfield land between Derby Midland Station and Westfield shopping centre in Derby into a new community of sustainable homes and businesses.

BSP Consulting MD David Sumner said: “It’s great news to hear that Castleward is one of the first development projects in the country to receive this BREEAM accreditation. BSP is very proud to be a part of this innovative neighbourhood development in Derby.”

BREEAM has become the world’s leading environmental assessment method for buildings since it was first launched in 1990.

Work on phase one of the Castleward redevelopment began in November 2012, and includes 163 homes, approximately 16,500sqft of commercial space, a boulevard and a new urban park over approximately five acres of land.

When complete, the whole scheme will feature 800 new homes and 34,500sqft of commercial space at Castleward.
