Purpose
BSP Consulting has an immediate vacancy for a Principal Civil Engineer Nottingham, to work within our experienced civil engineering design team.
Responsibilities
The Principal Civil Engineer will be responsible for the management, design, and drafting of a wide range of civil engineering schemes. Typical work will include, but is not limited to:
- Section 278 / Section 38 highway works for adoption
- Section 104 / Section 185 drainage works for adoption
- Private levels and private drainage design
- External works design
- Cut and fill analysis and earthworks design
- Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS)
- Liaison with local authorities, water companies, the Environment Agency, and project stakeholders
The role will also involve the design and drafting of civil engineering works across multiple sectors, including residential, industrial, commercial, and others. Project types range from multi‑storey developments to small housing schemes, with construction values typically between £250,000 and £30m. Many schemes are delivered to BIM Level 2 standards.
Design work is primarily undertaken using InfoDrainage and Civil 3D, with final drawings produced in AutoCAD.
The Principal Civil Engineer will also deputise for the team leader, supporting the planning and organisation of tasks, people, and resources to ensure projects are delivered on time and in accordance with current design guidelines.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Checking and overseeing team designs and calculations
- Contributing to and developing design standards
- Sharing technical knowledge across the team
- Influencing and shaping technical solutions
- Quoting for new works and managing project finances and monitoring budgets.
- Representing the civil engineering discipline and BSP Consulting on multi‑disciplinary projects
Experience
The role is suited to a civil engineer with 10+ years of relevant technical experience, including responsibility for overseeing and supporting team members and managing multiple concurrent projects.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to further develop their professional skills, working closely with colleagues across our civil engineering teams in multiple offices. Mentorship towards ICE Chartership can be provided where required.
Strong client‑care skills are essential. The successful candidate will be an effective communicator in written English and verbal communication, both in person and over the telephone.
A solid understanding of the construction industry, current design standards, and health and safety requirements is essential.
Experience with InfoDrainage, Civil 3D for design, and AutoCAD for technical drawing is preferred.
Education
A strong background of English, Mathematics and a logical analytical approach to problem solving is essential.
Candidates should ideally hold a degree in a relevant subject, or be able to demonstrate equivalent professional experience.
The successful applicant will be fully computer‑literate, with confident and competent use of Microsoft Word and Excel.

Location: Oxford Street, Nottingham
Hours of work: A minimum of 37.5 hours per week, core hours are 9am until 4pm, Monday to Friday where staff are required to be at work.
Holidays: Allowance is in line with industry standard and is subject to relevant experience.
Salary: A competitive salary will be offered and is subject to relevant experience.
