Civil and structural engineer BSP Consulting has been secured to work on a scheme to create a new community of homes on the site of the former colliery at Cotgrave in Nottinghamshire.
The East Midlands firm has been instructed to carry out the civil and traffic and transportation engineering for the development of 450 homes, which has just been granted planning permission.
The development is being built by sister companies Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes. It is one of the first developments in the country to achieve top marks in the Built For Life 12 accreditation, which recognises excellence in design quality, safety and community.
BSP’s role includes designing a number of junction upgrades, a new roundabout and T-junction access to the site, sustainable drainage systems, as well as a new pedestrian footbridge over the Grantham Canal.
Chartered civil engineer Matt Viggars, an associate at BSP Consulting, said: “This scheme at Cotgrave is one of the most significant regeneration projects for the Nottingham coalfields. It utilises the experience of BSP engineers on a technically challenging site. We are pleased to be involved in the next chapter of the life of the former colliery site and in helping to create a high quality development.”
The detailed scheme was granted planning permission following an in-depth consultation with local residents and community groups and is the culmination of years of master planning between the government’s Homes and Communities Agency who own the land at Cotgrave, Rushcliffe Borough Council and the local community.
The £100 million development will provide a mix of quality modern homes as well as underpinning at least 200 jobs and training opportunities locally. Construction work is expected to start shortly, following the signing of a legal agreement between the partners, with the first homes anticipated to be ready by late 2014/early 2015.
