Promotions
We are delighted to announce that three members of the BSP Consulting team were promoted in February.
Graduate civil engineer Ki Mclaren became a civil engineer, graduate flood risk engineer Thomas Hall became a flood risk engineer and graduate civil engineer Finlay East was promoted to civil engineer. Congratulations to all three.
Early career networking
BSP is part of a group of businesses which has set up an early career networking group exclusively for juniors and apprentices in the Regent Street and Ropewalk areas of Nottingham, and also pulling in representatives from other businesses in the NG1 area.
Other founding members of the team which has launched NG1Club include Devello Group and Botham Accounting.
The idea behind the new group is to help junior members of staff grow their network, learn from others, meet peers from within different industries and to connect with apprentices and early stage professionals.
The inaugural event took place on 20th February at Browns in the city, followed by a second event on the 24th April. Please let us know of anyone who you feel would benefit from attending future events and we can add them to the list.
New starter
We are pleased to welcome graduate civil engineer Hicham Chaikh, who joined our Nottingham team in February.
Women in the Built Environment
Our business development manager Carrie Booth spoke at the Women in the Built Environment event organised by the School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment at Nottingham Trent University earlier in the year.
The event heard from a range of women who work in the sector – highlighting the range of opportunities within the built environment, as well as the benefits of networking and mentoring.
Carrie, who talked about her 20-year career journey and about BSP’s female engineers, was speaking in her role as a committee member for the Nottingham Women in Construction group.
Greater Lincolnshire Construction and Property Awards
We were delighted to share a table with CORE Architects at the Greater Lincolnshire Construction and Property Awards organised by Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce and held at the Double Tree by Hilton in Lincoln in February. Well done to all the finalists and winners.
School fair
Representatives from BSP Consulting attended the Higher/Degree Level Apprenticeship Fair at The West Bridgford School earlier this year to give students an insight into the opportunities available.
Recent BSP degree graduate Josh Plumridge, who undertook a four-year university course while an apprentice structural engineer, and now qualified and appointed as a structural engineer with us, was able to give a first-hand account of his experience.
He was joined at the event by BSP associate structural engineer Gareth Ellison.
The fair was open to year 12 and 13 students and their families and gave them the opportunity to learn more about what apprenticeships are available now and in the future, what future employers are looking for when recruiting, such as qualifications, skills, qualities etc, the benefits an apprenticeship can provide and the variety of opportunities available to them after education.
Spring careers event
Members of the BSP Consulting team enjoyed engaging with students at Loughborough University’s Spring Careers Fair in February.
We were able to share details about the work experience and graduate opportunities that we offer, along with our continued support for staff through to chartership.
BSP director Paul Elphick and business development manager Carrie Booth represented the company.
NTU Insider Insights Panel
BSP director Tony Goddard joined a Nottingham Trent University Insider Insights Panel to give advice and understanding to young people about careers in the building, construction and surveying sectors.
The aim of the event was to ground students’ understanding of a particular sector through the real-life experience and career journeys of guest panel members.
Promoted as part of NTU’s SPRING FORWARD programme, the event gave Tony – who studied at Trent Poly, now Nottingham Trent University – the opportunity to share his career journey and provide advice and tips to students thinking of going into civil or structural engineering.
Padel tournament
Associate director Monika Anszperger and principal civil engineer Oliver McElroy represented BSP Consulting at the inaugural Construction and Property Padel Cup which raised money for Derby County Community Trust (DCCT).
Our duo played four games in the group stages against teams from Pick Everard, FHP, Armsons Barlow and Morecroft, winning two and losing two. Congratulations to Morecroft Electrical, who went on to win the tournament, which was held at We Are Padel on Pride Park in Derby.
Hosted by project managers and construction cost consultants Armsons Barlow in partnership with DCCT and Clowes Developments, the tournament attracted 32 teams and raised £1,031.54 for DCCT from a combination of the entry fee and through a raffle which featured a range of prizes, including a sparkling breakfast for two at Darley’s, a corporate 4-ball at Horsley Lodge Golf Club and a signed Derby County shirt.
“Padel was a great way to connect with other businesses in an informal capacity and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it,” added Oliver.
No Cannes Do 2025
Thanks to everyone who joined BSP Consulting, Roythornes Solicitors, Aspbury Planning and Pulse Consult for the No Cannes Do 2025 event – held in Nottingham for those not at the world real estate event MIPIM. It brought together professionals from the construction and property sector and was a great opportunity to network on home soil!
UKREiiF attendance
MD Carl Hilton, director Paul Elphick and business development manager Carrie Booth will be attending UKREiiF 2025 – the UK’s Real Estate, Investment and Infrastructure Forum – from 20th to 22nd May. To arrange a meeting there, please get in touch.
Work experience
We were very pleased to host A-level student Conor Bainbridge from The Becket School, Wilford, for a week of work experience earlier this year. He spent three days working in our structures team and two days working alongside the civil engineers in our Nottingham office.
MD Carl Hilton said: “He did a great job and it was a pleasure having him with us. Hopefully we provided an insight as to the life of an engineering consultant.”
Construction Night
A good time was had by all as BSP Consulting MD Carl Hilton, director Jason Davenport, and associates Gareth Ellison and Pedro Navarro hosted guests at the Construction Night held at Nottingham Rugby when Nottingham took on London Scottish.
Student support
BSP was part of the team that gave an insight to students at Derby College about the new extension that is being built for the Chatsworth Building at The Broomfield Hall Campus. The architect discussed the design elements, BSP covered the civil and structural engineering aspects, and the quantity surveyor spoke about the financial considerations.
After the presentation, a Q&A session was held and the following week, the students visited the site to see the project.
Celebrate Chesterfield
We were pleased to take part in the Celebrate Chesterfield Business Conference & Expo in March.
Organised by Destination Chesterfield in association with DogLand, the conference took place at the Winding Wheel Theatre and celebrated the town in the lead-up to Destination Chesterfield’s 15th anniversary, as well as showcasing local businesses and individuals that support the town.
Women in Construction
BSP Consulting was represented at the first Nottingham Women in Construction event, held at Alea Casino in the city.
Almost 120 joined the spring lunch held in March, including BSP Consulting’s associate director Carol Ell, civil engineer Jessica Broomfield, and business development manager Carrie Booth, who is a committee member of the organisation.
Guest speaker was Katherine from Juno Women’s Aid – the charity supported by NWIC this year. £2 from each ticket for the event was donated to supporting the work that the charity does in helping women.
