BSP Consulting is celebrating the news that the life-size bomber statue designed by the company is an awards finalist.
The project – entitled On Freedom’s Wings – has been shortlisted in the Greater Lincolnshire Construction and Property Awards 2026 in the Tourism & Leisure Project of The Year category.
Unveiled in September, the development sits in a field at Norton Disney, close to the A46 to honour the Royal Air Force crews of World War Two and Lincolnshire’s and Nottinghamshire’s aviation history.
The 29-metre-high art installation near the county border has been tilted to give the impression that the Lancaster Bomber is in flight and heading home to RAF Swinderby, a former RAF station. It has been dubbed the East Midlands’ Angel of the North and has already attracted much interest from around the world.
BSP Consulting structural engineers undertook the design work on this impressive monument, on behalf of the Bomber County Gateway Trust.
BSP MD Carl Hilton said: “We are very excited to learn that On Freedom’s Wings has been shortlisted in the Greater Lincolnshire Construction and Property Awards 2026.
“The whole team at BSP is incredibly proud to have been a part of this scheme. It was a truly inspiring project to design and one that we will never forget.
“The project has been the result of many people devoting their time, expertise, and energy to move it forward through each stage. This has resulted in a unique and iconic installation that will attract visitors to the area for decades to come and is a development that the county of Lincolnshire can be very proud of. Just like other landmark installations, On Freedom’s Wings has the potential to draw visitors from around the world.”
Other members of the team included Timmins Engineering and Construction, who manufactured the main frame of the plane installation, Hutchinson Engineering Services, who were responsible for lifting the statue into position on site, William Hare Ltd, who manufactured the podium supports that the plane sits on, and Jessops Construction, who ran and organised the site during construction work.
The winners of the Greater Lincolnshire Construction and Property Awards 2026 will be announced on 19th February 2026 at an awards ceremony held at Lincolnshire Showground.
